How to spot a scam

We at McCain love a good competition – who doesn’t like to be a winner? Unfortunately, there are scammers out there who see these giveaways as an opportunity to take advantage of consumer trust, all for financial gain. As always, our top priority is the safety of you, our McCain family, so we’ve put together a quick checklist that will help you identify if communication is from us or if it’s fake. Totally Fake

McCain will never:

• Send you a friend request - our profile is a legitimate company Facebook page
• Ask for banking details
• Ask for money

Scam checklist 

• Page or account only has a few followers/was created very recently
• Account is not verified (doesn’t have the blue tick next to the name)
• You are asked to click on suspicious links that are NOT on the official McCain SA domain
• Scammers often spoof official web addresses or create sites that look very similar to an official website – if the link looks strange, it probably is
• Check the official McCain South Africa website to see if the competition is valid – all promotions and giveaways will be featured on our competition page
• Also check our official social media channels by clicking on the icons on our website
• If an offer seems dodgy, let us know!

Totally Real

McCain will:

• Post the competition on our official social channels as well as our website
• Announce winners on official channels and then contact them via direct message (by the verified account)
• Then ask you for your name and email address only
• Then contact you via email or telephonically with more details
• If you are still not sure or just want to ensure that everything is above board, contact us on 0800 006 498.
